A DREAM Foster Home Promise
I
promise to show you love every day.
I
promise to give you heartworm preventative on the first day of each month.
(If DREAM does not send me your pill on
time, I will give you one of my own in the meantime.)
I
promise to keep an ID tag on you at all times, whether you are inside or
outside.
I
promise to always walk you on a leash when you are not in a fenced area.
I
promise never to hit you in any way.
I
promise to be patient when you have accidents in the house, and not to scold
you unless I see the accident happen.
I
promise to teach you that people can be kind, because I may be the first person
ever to show you kindness.
When your forever home is found, I promise to let you
go, through kisses and tears, so that I can make these promises to another dog
who needs me. ********* That's our promise to the dogs. Here's how it works for foster homes. Foster homes provide and finance food, toys, treats, and the "day to day" expenses of their foster dogs. They also help with transportation of the dog to / from the vet. DREAM provides and finances vet care and all other expenses. Each foster home is assigned to a POD -- led by a DREAM board member. That POD leader is responsible for working the applications that come in for their POD's foster doggies' adoptions. DREAM has 2 "Intake" coordinators that decide which dachshunds to take into DREAM, based on the space available and DREAM's financial situation. Each foster home defines what "kind" of dogs they are willing to foster -- some like only seniors, some like only young dogs, some like only females, some like behavioral issues, etc. When a dog of that description is in need, and your foster home has a space, the Intake coordinator asks your POD leader if you can take it. And it goes from there. If a foster home goes on vacation, we try to place the dog in "vacation foster" with another foster home, but if no space is available, we ask that you provide the same arrangement for your foster as you do for your own dogs while you are gone. The foster home can have as much or as little input into the adoption process as he / she likes, working with the POD leader. We discourage the adoption of your foster dogs (although it does happen). There is always another dog that needs you, and you will love every dog that comes through your home. Fostering is very emotional work. It is not for everyone, but for those who can handle it, it is very rewarding.
